State Rep. John Roth celebrated the successful vote of his budget recommendation by the Human Services Subcommittee in the House.
Roth, who serves as chair of the subcommittee, put forward a comprehensive plan that promotes appropriate spending for common-sense initiatives that put Michigan families first.
“I’m extremely proud of the work that we’ve been doing,” said Roth (R-Interlochen). “Our spending plan promotes projects that will help Michigan families lead better lives while also cutting wasteful government spending on programs that don’t work. This budget emphasizes accountability so we can make the most of the resources we have and help the most people who truly need assistance.”
Roth’s budget plan expands Permanent Supportive Housing, making it easier for the formerly homeless population to stay housed, keep employment and remain healthy. The 2-1-1 program, which provides Michigan residents with local community resources, was also expanded.
Kinship care grants were also introduced. These grants will provide relief for relatives or close family friends raising children when birth parents are unable to do so. Many of these guardians are retired and live on limited incomes even as the cost of childcare is increasing.
“We’re using this funding to make a difference,” Roth said. “These programs have real positive impacts on the lives of Michiganders, and we need to make sure that they’re able to do the job well. We’re able to do that because we spent months rooting out government waste and holding programs that don’t deliver results to a higher standard. The governor asked for hundreds of new Lansing bureaucrats in this budget, but we are focusing the taxpayers’ limited resources where they will have the most impact – right here in our community helping families.”
