Rep. Bierlein working to preserve historic Graham Field property in Caro
RELEASE|January 21, 2026

State Rep. Matthew Bierlein, of Vassar, is standing up for the future of a recreational staple in the city of Caro.

Bierlein, who represents Caro residents and the surrounding area as part of the 97th House District, has asked the state’s Department of Natural (DNR) for clarification and solutions on Graham Field, which has served the public for more than a half century after being developed in 1960 by Bill Graham and Jim Trisch. The field has stood as a place where sport and hometown tradition come together – hosting teams, traveling leagues and family reunion games among those not just within Caro, but from Juniata Township, Mayville, Vassar, and other communities.

The DNR recently determined that a portion of the property extends onto state-owned land and is planning to sell the part in question for $7,300.

“While I respect the Department’s responsibility to manage state land appropriately, I believe this situation presents an opportunity for a more community-centered solution,” Bierlein wrote in a letter to the DNR. “Donating this disputed parcel to preserve Graham Field would protect a longstanding public benefit at minimal cost, while reinforcing the Department’s commitment to supporting outdoor recreation, youth engagement, and community well-being.

“Graham Field is not just a community landmark to me. It is part of my own story. I used this field when I was younger and, like so many others, I benefitted from having a safe, welcoming place to play, interact with others, learn teamwork and build lasting memories. This field can continue to serve future generations, just as it has served mine and so many others before me.”

Bierlein said he is eager to discuss the matter further with the DNR and explore all options for an important community resource.

“I’m going to keep working to preserve something that’s part of the fabric of our community,” Bierlein said. “I look forward to continued conversation on this issue, and I appreciate feedback from the community.”
