State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz continues to advocate for Michigan Department of Corrections employees and retirees through the state budget process.

Schmaltz, R-Jackson, introduced a budget amendment that would ensure retired state corrections officers don’t have their pensions taxed by the state.

“Every day, corrections officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities and uphold justice,” Schmaltz said. “Their commitment to this challenging and frequently overlooked role warrants our appreciation. In retirement, these public servants deserve the respect and relief that reflects the immense contributions they have made. This is the least we can do.”

In 2023, the Legislature approved a comprehensive tax relief plan designed to benefit retirees throughout Michigan. Through the legislation, the state embraced a policy that grants retired police, fire, and corrections personnel the ability to fully deduct the taxes on their pensions from their state income taxes. The corrections officers included under the plan, however, only involve those employed by a county sheriff, not the state.

Schmaltz’s previously introduced House Bill 4578 to ensure those who retire from the Michigan Department of Corrections are not left behind. The budget amendment she introduced this week would have accomplished the same goal – fully exempting MDOC corrections officer pensions from the state income tax.

While her amendment was rejected by House Democrats, Schmaltz vowed to continue standing up for Michigan’s corrections officers.

This week, Schmaltz also sponsored a resolution to recognize May 12-18 as Correctional Officers Week in Michigan.
