Rep. Markkanen calls for prayers after death of Melvindale police officer
RELEASE|July 24, 2024

State Rep. Greg Markkanen on Wednesday encouraged people across the Upper Peninsula to keep law enforcement and their families in their prayers after the recent killings of police officers across Michigan. Melvindale Police Officer Mohamed Said, Oakland County Deputy Brad Reckling, and Hillsdale County Deputy William Butler Jr. all were killed in the line of duty over the last month.

“There is no greater affront to a community than targeting those with the sole purpose of keeping our streets safe,” said Markkanen, R-Hancock. “These brave men and their families have not left our prayers since we learned of these unspeakable tragedies. Violent criminals stole more than just three law enforcement officers. They stole fathers who will never again walk through the front door to hug their excited children and husbands who will never again kiss their wife goodnight.

“Our law enforcement officers know the hazards that come with their job. But simply knowing the risk will never reduce the pain and grief felt when a heroic individual pays that ultimate price. We can only continue to offer prayer and support so that these families know that the whole of Michigan stands behind them in this impossible time.”

Markkanen noted that the recent uptick in violence against police underscores the clear need to secure additional resources for law enforcement.

“We have a responsibility as elected officials to ensure that every single law enforcement agency and officer is properly equipped every time they clock in,” Markkanen said. “Whether downtown Detroit or Hancock, our police officers deserve to know that their state government is willing to do more than just pledge their support in a press release. We must back our words up with action and immediately secure additional funding for law enforcement equipment, recruitment, and retention.”
