Legislator to chair Homeland Security and Foreign Influence subcommittee

State Rep. Will Bruck this week was appointed by House Speaker Matt Hall to serve on the House Oversight Committee and chair the Homeland Security and Foreign Influence subcommittee. He will also serve as vice chair of the subcommittee focused on reviewing state and local assistance programs.

The House Oversight Committee plays a vital role in holding state government accountable, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used responsibly, and exposing inefficiencies, waste, and abuse. This term, the committee will operate with an expanded structure that allows for a more in-depth examination of state operations through six subcommittees focusing on key areas, including corporate subsidies, child welfare, public health, and government transparency.

Bruck, R-Erie, said his priorities on the committee will be restoring accountability and ensuring the government serves the people effectively and honestly.

“The people of Michigan deserve a government that is honest, transparent, and accountable,” Bruck said. “Instead, we’ve seen blatant abuses of power, backroom deals that funnel away taxpayer dollars, and mismanagement that erodes public trust. We must ensure that government agencies and programs operate efficiently and with integrity. The Oversight Committee and its subcommittees will work to root out corruption, expose wasteful spending, and restore faith in the institutions meant to serve our communities.”

The Homeland Security and Foreign Influence subcommittee is a cutting edge, first in the nation panel at the state level that will highlight the security of the state in addition to the federal government. It will focus on securing one of the longest international borders in the country as well as combating the direct influence of hostile nation states who have infiltrated our economy, higher education, and governmental institutions.

Bruck is a 31-year Army veteran with a background in intelligence. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 with four combat tours. Speaker Hall determined him to be the most qualified person in the Legislature to chair this pioneering oversight committee, putting him on the forefront of the state’s effort to protect residents.

In addition to his role on the Oversight Committee, Bruck will serve on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which handles policies affecting roads, aviation, rail, and maritime infrastructure at the state and local levels.
